Ist die St. Nikolai-Kirche barrierefrei zugänglich?
Ja. Wir haben im Außenbereich einen Fahrstuhl auf der rechten Seite. Bitte machen Sie sich per Klingel bemerkbar. Eingeschränkt möglich ist der Zugang zu den barrierefreien Toiletten. Diese sind über einen Scherenlift erreichbar, so dass ein spontaner Toilettenbesuch an vollen Tagen, bei Gruppen oder unmittelbar vor Konzertbeginn leider nicht in allen Fällen möglich ist.

Ja! Oben, unten, links und rechts – toben Sie sich aus! Bitte beachten Sie dabei das Recht am eigenen Bild der anderen Besucher:innen.

Ist die Kirche im Winter beheizt?
Ja. Allerdings auf Grund der Deckenhöhe nicht auf Wohnzimmertemperatur – mit Jacke ist es aber auch über einen längeren Zeitraum angenehm bei uns.

Ist der Turm während der Öffnungszeiten immer geöffnet?
In aller Regel ja. Die Ausnahme bildet der Sonntag, hier dürfen Sie nach dem Gottesdienst noch die Orgelmatinée genießen und dann ab 12 Uhr auf den Turm steigen. Außerdem ist der Turm grundsätzlich gesperrt bei Starkregen, Glätte und Gewitter, außerdem im Falle technischer Probleme.

Wann kann mensch die Orgel hören?
Die Orgel ist jeden Sonntag im Gottesdienst zu hören, immer ab 10 Uhr. Hinzu kommt ein reiches Konzertprogramm über das ganze Kirchenjahr. An vielen Tagen lädt die Gemeinde zwischen 11:15 und 12 Uhr zur Orgelmatinée in der Offenen Kirche ein. Auch zu anderen Zeiten kann mit etwas Glück Orgelmusik zu hören sein.

Sind Hunde in der Kirche erlaubt?
Leider nein. Allein Begleithunde bilden die Ausnahme.

Ist die Kirche evangelisch oder katholisch? Wird sie noch aktiv genutzt?
Die St. Nikolaikirche ist das Herz einer knapp 3.000 Personen umfassenden evangelischen Gemeinde. Dies findet Ausdruck im sonntäglichen Gottesdienst, zahlreichen Gemeindekreisen und –aktivitäten, am Feiertagen und so weiter. Alle Infos dazu finden Sie in unserem Gemeindebrief.

Wann und von wem wurde die Kirche gebaut?
König Friedrich Wilhelm III beauftragte 1826 den Architekten Karl Friedrich Schinkel mit der Planung. Er entwarf den Kuppelbau mit dem Grundriss eines griechischen Kreuzes nach Vorbild des Panthéon in Paris und der St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Aus Kostengründen enstand aber zunächst nur eine Kirche ohne Kuppel (Bauzeit 1830-1837). Schinkels Schüler Ludwig Persius hatte die Bauleitung inne. Unter König Friedrich Wilhelm IV wurde dann – durch Persius, Friedrich August Stüler und Gustav Emil Prüfer – noch die Kuppel aufgesetzt und die Kirche aus statischen Gründen um vier Ecktürme erweitert. Schinkel durfte die Fertigstellung seiner Idee eines Kuppelbaus im Jahr 1850 nicht mehr erleben. Er starb nach einem Hirnschlag am 9. Oktober 1841.

Woher kommt der Name St. Nikolai?
Der Name bezieht sich auf den Heiligen Nikolaus, den Schutzpatron der Händler und erinnert damit an die Anfänge Potsdams als Handelskreuz nahe der Havel.

Wurde die Kirche im Krieg zerstört?
Ja. Die Kuppel und der vordere Teil wurden zum Ende des Krieges durch Bomben zerstört. Das Haus wurde dann in der DDR-Zeit mit Westmitteln wieder aufgebaut und im Mai 1981 wieder geweiht. Seitdem bietet sie Platz für ein reiches Kultur- und Gemeindeleben. Seit September 2017 gibt es in St. Nikolai auch wieder eine Große Orgel. Im oberen Teil der Kuppel finden sich noch Skulpturen, die mit ihren Kriegsbeschädigungen wieder eingebaut wurden – als Mahnung für den Frieden.

Im Rahmen des Religions- oder LER-Unterrichts, als Kunstprojekt oder einfach beim Klassenausflug – St. Nikolai sollte bei keiner Potsdambesichtigung fehlen! The congregation of St. Nicholas' Church Potsdam
Our church houses a protestant congregation of currently 2.656 members from the city center, the Berliner Vorstadt, Zentrum-Ost and Zentrum-Süd, Brauhausberg as well as Templiner Vorstadt and parts of Insel Hermannswerder. Every Sunday at ten, Christians come together to celebrate a protestant service. Many more acitivites keep the congregation lively. Pfarrer Matthias Mieke will be there for you in any kind of situation.
Infos on architecture and building history of St. Nicholas' Church
St. Nicholas' Church in Potsdam is one of the most important examples of architecture by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Its dome stands tall above the city, forming the most important part of Potsdam's skyline, 78 metres high at the top of its large golden cross. The four corners of the building are crowned by four slim towers housing the four bronze bells ringing three times daily - at 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. - as well as for services and remembrance times. On top of the four towers, four angels are raising their hands praying and blessing the city.
Inside, the church reaches a proud height of 52 metres. Its ground plan exhibits the form of a Greek (square) cross with four arms of equal size topped by four brick barrel vaults. The large semicircle windows with the colours of the rainbow on the east and west side hint at the creation story in the bible. The cross arm to the north contains the apse with the Chancel and the Sanctuary. Opposite, you can see the gallery with the large organ of St. Nicholas's Church, completed in September 2017, with its 55 registers and 3.600 pipes. The church can accommodate up to 800 persons.
Your visit at St. Nicholas' Church
St. Nicholas' is an open church welcoming you warmly! You can visit Karl Friedrichs Schinkel's famous dome, spot sculpures, frescoes and paintings, listen to our impressive organ being played between 11.15 a.m. and noon on many days, and enjoy the view all over Potsdam and its surroundings when visiting the tower. The church is accessible for all and you are welcome to take photos. Information for children (in German) and grown-ups (in different languages) is available at the welcome desk. Please note that due to concerts, events and maintenance, opening times can be limited.
The visit to the tower costs 5 Euros per person and leads you over 223 steps through the building history of our church all the way up to the 42-metre-high platform leading all around the dome in a 360-degree tour. Information on surrounding buildings can be found on the handrail.

Is the church wheelchair-accessible?
Yes. Outside, there is a lift on the right hand side. Please ring the bell for attention. Visiting our accessible toilets is possible within limitations. They can be reached via stairlift, so on busy days, with larger groups or right before the beginning of concerts, access may be limited.

Am I allowed to take photos?
Yes, you are! The only limit is other visitors' rights to their own image - and the respect for prayer, service and music, of course.

Is the church heated in winter?
Yes. As the building is so high, you might need a jacket, though.

Is the tower always open during the church's opening times?
Generally yes. An expection is on Sundays between 11 a.m. and noon when you are invited to listen to the organ after the service and then visit the tower from 12 o'clock. In case of storm, heavy rain, icy conditions or technical problems, the tower will be closed.

When can I listen to the organ?
You can hear the organ during our services, every Sunday from 10 a.m., but also at a rich variety of concerts throughout the year. On many days, the congregation invites you to the organ matinée between 11.15 a.m. and 12 o'clock. Apart from that, you need a little luck to hear the organ in the open church.

Are dogs allowed inside the church?
Sorry, but no. The only exception are assistance dogs.

Is the church protestant or catholic? Is it still in use?
St. Nicholas' church is the heart of an congregation of about 2.600 protestant Christians. This is expressed in the services every Sunday, groups and activities, holidays and so on. You will find all the dates and infos in our printed paper "St. Nicholas' Church" (in German).

When and by whom was the church built?
In 1826, King Friedrich Wilhelm III instructed architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel to make the plans for this church. It was him who designed the domed building in the shape of a Greek cross. His inspirations were St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London and the Panthéon in Paris. For financial reasons, the first version of Schinkel's church was built without the dome (building time 1830-1837). Schinkels student Ludwig Persius supervised the construction. Under the rule of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, the dome was erected – by Persius, Friedrich August Stüler and Gustav Emil Prüfer – and for structural reasons, the four towers were added to the corners. Schinkel didn't live long enough to see his church being finalised in 1850. He died after a stroke on October 9th, 1841.

Where does the name St. Nicholas' come from?
The name comes from Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of traders and reminds us of the beginnings of Potsdam's history as a trading hub near the river Havel.

Was the church destroyed in World War II?
Yes, it was. The dome and the porticus were destroyed or seriuosly damaged by the end of the war. With financial contributions from Western Germany, the house was rebuilt in the following decades during the GDR time and re-sanctified in May 1981. In the top part of the dome, you can find sculptures that kept their war damages - as a memorial for peace.
